Why QuickBooks Not Opening after Windows 10 Update?

QuickBooks may not open after updating Windows 10. This is a common issue that QB users face. This prevents them from accessing the QuickBooks Company file (QBW). Before calling Intuit support, or a qualified professional to fix the problem, there are some solutions.

These are the reasons QuickBooks won’t launch following Windows 10 updates.

  • Windows upgrade issues

  • Compatibility issues between QuickBooks and Windows 10

  • The QB program may crash if there are incompatible Internet settings.

Whatever the reason, opening QuickBooks can be frustrating as it blocks data access until QB is fixed.

How can I fix QuickBooks not opening following a Windows Update?

These are solutions for quickbooks won't open issues that don't appear to be resolved by Windows Updates.

Workaround 1 - Restore Windows 10 to an earlier build (version).

Many users reported that QuickBooks opened perfectly after they restored Windows 10 from an earlier version. This will erase any apps or drivers that were installed after the upgrade.

These steps will enable you to restore Windows 10 from an earlier version.

  • Click on the Windows Start button and then click Settings.

  • Click the Recovery> tab in the left panel to go back to an older build. Click on the button "Get Started" to follow the prompts.

After you've restored Windows 10 to an earlier build, it is time to reinstall QuickBooks.

This method has its downsides

This temporary fix will not last. Apps that were upgraded to Windows 10 will not work. You won't be able to use Windows Mail, or any other app after you have downgraded to Windows 8.1.

Workaround 2 - Troubleshoot Compatibility

  • In the Windows search bar, type in QuickBooks Once you have found QuickBooks, click the icon and choose "Open File Location".

  • Right-click on the QB file, and click Properties

  • To select the Compatibility tab, click the Properties dialog box. Choose Windows OS (8.1/8/7) in the drop-down menu.

  • Click OK after clicking Apply

Now, open QB. If it doesn't open, you can try the solutions below.

This method has its downsides

Access to the latest Windows 10.x updates will be blocked if you are using compatibility mode in an older Windows 8.1/8/7 edition.

Workaround 3 - Block Access to the Internet with QuickBooks

Caution! QB may be damaged if the feature is disabled. Be sure to backup all data before you attempt this workaround.

If you create a firewall rule to block the QuickBooks executable (QBW32.EXE), then QB might be launched without any problems. These steps will help you do this:

  • Open Control Panel and choose Windows Firewall if QuickBooks is not opening on your system.

  • From the left navigation pane, click "Advanced Settings" to open the Windows Firewall window.

  • When the "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security” window opens, click on Outbound Rules. Next, click on "New Rule" in the Actions pane. To open the Windows Firewall with the Advanced Security window, click 'Outbound Rules.

  • Select 'Program' from the Rule Type window and click Next.

  • Select the radio button "This Program Path" in the 'Programs' window.

  • Click on the "Next" button.

  • Click "Next" in the "Action" window.

  • You must make sure you have chosen the Domain', Private and Public options in the Profile window. Next, click on the "Next" button.

  • Give the firewall rule a name in the "Name" window (e.g. Block QB Internet Connection). Click 'Finish'.

  • Close the Windows Firewall Window

If you have already blocked QB access to the Internet, the Windows upgrade will not cause any problems.

This method has its downsides

This method works best if QuickBooks Desktop runs on the same computer as your QuickBooks data file. This method won't work if the QB file that you want to access is on another computer.

Workaround 4 - Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool

If none of these solutions work for you, you may try QuickBooks' built-in tools like the QB Installation Diagnostic Tool. Here are the details:

Important: Please ensure that quickbooks tool hub has been installed on your computer before you move to the next step.

  • Launch QuickBooks Tool Hub

  • In the tool hub window, click the tab titled "Installation Issues".

  • Click on the "QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool" button.

  • Once the repairs are complete, you can restart your computer
